Reflections at Cherwell
Punting is one of Oxford’s favourite summer activities. This drawing shows the view as you approach Magdalen Bridge Boathouse, one of the city’s best-known punting spots.
Magdalen Bridge tells a long Oxford story:
- A bridge has stood here since 1004.
- By the 1500s, there was a 20-arch wide stone bridge.
- The bridge you see today was built 1772–1790.
- It was widened in 1882–83 (see the plaque by the Botanic Garden).
