When the Bridge Opens
Tower Bridge was opened on 30 June 1894, and remains one of the great feats of Victorian engineering. When river traffic needs to pass, its two bascules rise, pivoting like giant seesaws.
- Its Neo-Gothic style was chosen to complement the nearby Tower of London. It suggests a medieval castle, but beneath the stonework lies a solid steel frame.
- It took eight years, five major contractors and 432 workers each day to build.
- Tower Bridge is often confused with London Bridge, a much plainer crossing a short distance upriver.
