The design
The Bodleian Library is one of the UK’s six legal deposit libraries. It opened to scholars in 1602. Since 1610, it has had the right to receive a copy of every book published in the British Isles.
Over time, this helped the Bodleian grow into one of Europe’s great libraries. Today, the Bodleian Libraries hold over 13 million printed items, as well as more than 1 million special objects, including manuscripts, rare books, and maps.
This makes the Bodleian especially remarkable. It is not only a historic Oxford landmark, but also a place that helps protect the nation’s published history.
