The design
The view of from Island Gardens on the opposite bank has been painted and admired for centuries, sometimes called the "Canaletto view" after the Venetian artist who made it famous.
Built on the site of Greenwich Palace, birthplace of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Mary I, the buildings have served 3 purposes:
- A Tudor royal palace (15th–17th c.)
- The Royal Hospital for Seamen, designed by Christopher Wren (1696–1869)
- A naval officers' training college, and today a UNESCO World Heritage site open to the public (1873–present)
