The design
The Palace of Westminster has been the home of the British Parliament since the 16th century, on a site where royal palaces have stood since the 11th century. The building you see today was rebuilt after a catastrophic fire in 1834, designed by Sir Charles Barry and A.W. Pugin in the Victorian Gothic style.
The dolphin lampposts along the Thames Embankment are a beloved piece of Victorian street furniture. Designed by George John Vulliamy in the 1870s, they were inspired by the intertwined fish sculptures on the Fontana del Nettuno in Rome's Piazza del Popolo, which Vulliamy encountered in his travels through Italy.
Original hand-drawn illustration by artist Angel Shen, created exclusively for Potatote.
